KC Roos men’s soccer team opens NCAA Championship with win, advances to 2nd round

The Kansas City Roos of UMKC won their first NCAA Championship men’s soccer game in more than two decades Thursday, defeating Saint Louis 2-0 on the road.

KC advances to the second round of the tournament and will meet Missouri State in Springfield. In a regular-season game, the Roos defeated the Bears 3-2 on Sept. 2.

On Thursday, Kansas City got second-half goals from Guille Munoz and Jeremy Francou to complete the scoring. Goalkeeper Brandon McGaugh collected the shutout.

The victory was the first for the Roos in 12 all-time games against the Billikens, and their first triumph in the NCAA Championship tourney since 2001. The Roos stand 13-4-3 and have set a program record for victories.

They’ve won a nation’s best eight road games.

“We’re the best road team in the country for a reason,” Roos coach Ryan Pore said.

Sunday’s contest will begin at 6:30 p.m.
