The Kansas City Mavericks played their season opener in Coralville, Iowa Friday night, losing 7-4.

Twenty-four hours later, they evened their record at 1-1 by beating the same Iowa Heartlanders team 5-3 in their ECHL home opener at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence.

Lane Scheidl and Weston Michaud scored for the Mavs in the opening period, Ryan Olsen scored in the second and Olsen and Shawn Weller added goals in the third.

Iowa (1-1) took 25 shots on goal to KC’s 20. The game was tied in 3-3 in the final period before Olsen’s second goal and Weller’s empty-netter finished off the visitors.

The Mavericks are back in action at home Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. against Tulsa.

This is the 13th season for the minor-league hockey franchise affiliated with the Calgary Flames of the NHL and the AHL’s Stockton Heat.
