Kansas City Comets to play Jan. 22 MASL soccer match at KC’s downtown T-Mobile Center

The Kansas City Comets indoor-soccer team will play the second game in its 40-year history at KC’s downtown arena, the T-Mobile Center, in January.

The Comets, of the Major Arena Soccer League, or MASL, open their 2021-22 season next month. That slate of games includes one that will be highly anticipated by fans on Saturday, Jan. 22, at T-Mobile Center against the Tacoma Stars.

It will be the second time the Comets have played at the downtown arena. They also played there in 2012 against the Wichita Wings. The arena was known as the Sprint Center then.

The January match will take place during the United Soccer Coaches Convention at nearby Bartle Hall. The convention is billed as the largest gathering of soccer coaches and administrators in the world and is expected to draw more than 10,000 attendees and hundreds of exhibitors.

“The Comets organization couldn’t be more excited to be playing a game at T-Mobile Center,” Comets managing partner Brian Budzinski said in a statement. “We know that our fans as well as the convention attendees are really going to enjoy experiencing this showcased match at such a world-class arena.”

More than 9,000 fans attended the team’s 2012 game against the Wings, filling the arena’s lower bowl. Tickets for the Jan. 22 match go on sale Friday, Oct. 15 through T-MobileCenter.com. Groups of 10 or more can purchase discounted tickets by calling the Comets directly at 888-9-COMETS.

“T-Mobile Center looks forward to welcoming Kansas City soccer fans for fast-paced action this January,” T-Mobile Center general manager Jay Cooper said in a news release.

The Comets play their home games at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. Their 24-game season begins Nov. 12 with a Central Cup match against the Wings.

The Comets will this season be celebrating the 40th anniversary of their arrival in Kansas City and the 30th anniversary of the Kansas City Attack, highlighted by special retro games, throwback uniforms and other festivities.

The Comets were 7-5 last season, winning their playoff-opening series in two games before losing to Ontario in three.
