‘Been down this road before’: What are KC’s concerns on the gas crisis? | Opinion

Gas prices seem to be rising overnight, mostly attributed to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing Iran war, which has disrupted global oil supplies.

On Wednesday, a regular gallon of gas in the Kansas City area cost on average $4.165, according to American Automobile Association data. The Star reported: “This is 77 cents more than the average price a month prior. Diesel cost $5.171 a gallon on average, 40 cents more than last month.”

I filled up Wednesday night at $4.29 in the Northland. I wasn’t on empty, and that was the only reason my bill didn’t top 50 bucks. But if you’re of a certain age, you’ve seen this before, right? Some of you remember the 1970s and 1980s oil crises that sparked shortages around the country.

I grew up in Chicago, and remember my parents trying to fill their tanks. I didn’t have my own car yet, but years later, when I did, was grateful for the lower prices I paid for my own gas.

This week in the Star Opinion newsletter, I asked for your memories, or the memories of your parents. I’ve heard from a few of you, but would love to hear from more. Here are some of your remembrances:

Been down this road before. As our dollars buy less, we become very selective as to how we spend them.
With price is going up you’re definitely having to make choices. I just hope the younger generations can do this. They really never had to go without.

Click here and let us know if you are concerned about rising prices and tell us what you remember from the 1970s and 1980s oil crises that sparked shortages around the country. If you are too young to remember, have your parents shared memories about that time in Kansas City?

We’ll share your thoughts and memories in a future article.
