Kansas City area gas prices crack $4 a gallon. See the average in your county
Gas prices this week rose over $4 a gallon in the Kansas City area as the country’s war with Iran continued.
On Wednesday, a regular gallon of gas in the Kansas City, Missouri, area cost on average $4.165, according to American Automobile Association data. This is 77 cents more than the average price a month prior. Diesel cost $5.171 a gallon on average, 40 cents more than last month.
Even with the price hikes in the Kansas City area, Missouri and Kansas have some of the cheapest gas in the nation, according to AAA.
The national average gas price is higher than any time since June 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
At that time, the Kansas City, Missouri, area recorded the highest average gas price — $4.595 a gallon — which is 43 cents higher than the current price.
The Iran war has caused gas prices to rise in the last two months, because the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil flows, has been effectively closed for months.

Here is the average price by county for a gallon of regular gas on May 6, according to AAA:
- Platte: $4.237
- Clay: $4.212
- Johnson: $4.17
- Jackson: $4.167
- Wyandotte: $4.104
More than 8 in 10 Americans said the high gas prices strain their household budget, according to a NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll national survey conducted last week.
A majority of Americans — more than 3 in 5 — blame President Donald Trump for the rise in gasoline prices, according to the same survey.
Oil prices have an impact on voting behavior, according to decades of academic research. In 2022, gas prices surged to nearly $5 a gallon and Republicans were able to flip control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
