One proposed reuse of Kemper Arena died last week, when a developer revealed it won’t try to put a youth sports facility there.

That sudden decision could help make the dreams of American Royal officials come true: They have a somewhat easier path toward demolishing Kemper Arena.

But not so fast. The Royal’s plan to replace the arena with a smaller facility would cost the public and private sector tens of millions of dollars. It also would wipe the architecturally significant Kemper off the map.

Kansas Citians might — or might not — get to weigh on on whether they want their tax dollars involved in this project.
