A day after he underwent surgery to remove his appendix, Royals starter Jason Vargas was placed on the disabled list on Thursday.

The team called up right-handed reliever Louis Coleman from Class AAA Omaha to take his roster spot. Coleman has a 6.41 ERA in 18 games this season.

The Royals also announced that left fielder Alex Gordon will not be taking part in the All-Star game due to a wrist sprain, although he will be making the trip to Target Field in Minnesota. Gordon was not placed on the disabled list.

Manager Ned Yost indicated he expected Bruce Chen to take Vargas’ place in the rotation at least for Sunday’s start against the Tigers.

Before Vargas underwent surgery, trainer Nick Kenney estimated he could miss three to four weeks. The team hopes he can return sooner.
