The Royals are known for their stout defense, and apparently it runs through the organization.
The Class A affiliate in Lexington turned a nifty triple play Sunday in a 5-2 victory against West Virginia.
After allowing hits to the first two batters of the second inning, Legends pitcher Luis Santos (the Royals’ pitcher of the year last season at short-season Burlington) snared a ball hit to his left and fired to to shortstop Humberto Arteaga for a force. Arteaga made a nice turn and fired the ball to first baseman Samir Duenez.
Duenez, the Royals’ player of the year last year at Rookie Surprise, then caught a runner trying to score from second and made a perfect throw to catcher Frank Schwindel.
It was the ol‘ 1-6-3-2 triple play. Here is video of the play from www.milb.com:
