Alex Gordon plans to take batting practice on the field on Tuesday for the first time since wrist surgery.

“Unless I break my wrist today,” Gordon said.

He was being droll. He is inching closer to making his Cactus League debut this spring.

Gordon has been taking soft toss and indoor batting practice over the weekend. Manager Ned Yost declared that Gordon looked “100 percent” healthy when it came to his throwing. The hitting is more of a concern.

Gordon has insisted he will be ready by Opening Day.

“This is a very cautious schedule for him,” Yost said. “Knowing it’s spring training, there’s no need to push it. He’ll be ready by Opening Day. They’ve mapped out a very slow and cautious map back for him.”
