Flash flood warning issued for Kansas City metro after heavy downpours

The flood warning is in effect until 9:45 a.m. or Johnson, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, northwestern Cass, southwestern Clay, southwestern Jackson and southeastern Platte counties.
At 6:47 a.m., radar indicated torrential rains were falling across the metro area.

Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses is possible, as well as poor drainage and low-lying areas, the weather service said.
Some locations that is expected to see flash flooding include Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe, Independence, Lee’s Summit, Shawnee, Lenexa, Leawood, Raytown, Grandview, Belton, Prairie Village, Raymore, Gardner, Lansing, Merriam, Mission, Bonner Springs and De Soto.
The weather service urged people to turn around if they come across flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
