Leawood officials rescheduled the city’s fireworks show for Sunday and canceled its scheduled Independence Day activities Saturday because of ongoing storms in the area.

The fireworks show, originally scheduled for Saturday night, will take place Sunday at 9:45 p.m. at Leawood City Park.

“Although weather conditions may improve later this evening, the continued threat of lightning prevents crews from safely setting up the fireworks in time for a full show,” according to a Leawood news release.

“In addition, the City wants to prioritize the safety of guests who would be parking off-site and could face challenges exiting the area quickly if severe weather develops.”

Additional storms are expected in the Kansas City area in the afternoon and may continue overnight. The National Weather Service in Kansas City said meteorologists are still uncertain about the track and intensity of the storms but that they could be strong or severe.

The storms may weaken as they move east and could bring lightning, gusty winds, brief downpours and flooding, according to NWS.

There is a chance of thunderstorms in Leawood until 4 a.m. Sunday, according to the NWS forecast.
