Thunderstorms roll in as heat remains — how are July 4 festivities impacted?

The possibility of approaching thunderstorms in the Kansas City area has forced the cancellation of two Fourth of July parades.

Leawood city officials have canceled its Independence Day parade less than an hour before its planned start time due to incoming severe weather. The Lenexa parade was also canceled due to the forecast, the city announced Saturday morning.

There is a chance of severe thunderstorms in the Kansas City area on Saturday morning, with scattered storms possible through the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

The National Weather Service cautioned severe storms could bring damaging winds and hail.

Kansas City is also under an extreme heat warning, which will be in effect until Saturday night. NWS forecasts temperatures will reach around 92 degrees, with heat index values as high as 97 degrees.

Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to about 69 degrees, with a chance of thunderstorms and rain until 5 a.m., according to the NWS.
