The extreme heat is still on for 4th of July in Kansas City. Storms could follow
From extreme heat to severe storm risks, this Fourth of July weekend around Kansas City is predicted to bring some wild weather, according to the National Weather Service.
The Kansas City area remains under an extreme heat warning through 8 p.m. Saturday, July 4. The forecast for Friday, July 3 remains as mostly sunny with a high near 93 degrees, and heat index values for Friday can reach the triple digits.
Overnight temperatures are expected to sit around the mid- to upper 70s, but it won’t provide relief from the daytime heat. As the temperatures cool down overnight, there is a 40% chance that showers and thunderstorms could hit northern Missouri after 2 a.m.
Showers are likely on Independence Day and there is a possibility of a thunderstorm in NWS’s coverage area, but it’s likely to happen before 7 a.m. During the day, it’ll be mostly sunny with a high temperature of 93 degrees and a heat index value of 102.
Additional showers and thunderstorms are likely Saturday evening, although they will probably happen before 3 a.m. Sunday, July 6.
Sunday, July 5, could bring showers and thunderstorms before 10 a.m., and the weather service says there’s a 30% chance of rain in between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday night will be clear with a low of 72 degrees
The Kansas City area is under a marginal risk (Level one of five) of severe weather.
The heat is still on in the Kansas City area next week, with high temperatures in the low 90s and low temperatures in the low 70s. The heat index values sit in the 95-100 degree range, the weather service said.
Off-and-on rain chances will continue through the early part of the week, but the chances are low. The weather service says there’s around a 20% to 30% chance of rain on any given day.
Fans heading out to the FIFA Fan Festival at the National World War I Museum & Memorial or any outdoor watch parties this weekend to watch any of the round of 32 and round of 16 games should take extra precautions against heat while they’re outside.
Do not forget a refillable, plastic water bottle if you’re attending the Fan Festival, as there are multiple free water refill stations available on the grounds.
The weather service says to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing, and to try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
