Kansas City placed under heat advisory as high temps hit the metro
With temperatures rising to the mid-90s this week, the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for the Kansas City area.
Temperatures are expected to hit a high of 96 degrees this week, with heat indexes falling between 105 and 110 degrees. Overnight temperatures in the mid to high 70s are not expected to bring much relief, according to the weather service.
The heat warning spans across northeastern Kansas and northwest Missouri, including Kansas City, and is currently set to last until 9 p.m. Friday. Other areas of both states are in a heat advisory.
Monday’s forecast shows a high of 93 degrees, while temperatures are set to rise to 94 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, 96 on Thursday and 95 on Friday. Temperatures over the Fourth of July weekend are expected to remain high, with temps landing around 95 degrees on Saturday and dropping to 90 degrees by Sunday.
The National Weather Service urges people in impacted areas to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid the sun and check in on relatives and neighbors. The service also advised those outside to take extra precautions by wearing lightweight and loose fitting clothing, limiting strenuous activities and taking action when symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke appear.
High temperatures have already caused a Johnson County World Cup watch party to be canceled over the weekend due to Sunday’s high heat.
