Pleasant weather won’t last. Here’s when storms, sticky heat return to KC area
Enjoy the break, Kansas City. The metro stays quiet and comfortable Wednesday before warmer, more humid weather and shower chances return later this week, the National Weather Service said.
“Today (Wednesday) tends to be a rinse and repeat of yesterday for much of the area with temperatures in the low to mid-80s and pleasant dew point/humidity conditions,” the weather service said.
The main change will be that the wind will turn more out of the south and southeast, but the air should stay fairly comfortable and not too sticky, the weather service said.
That changes on Thursday, when the metro enters a prolonged period of warmer and more humid conditions, along with the chances for showers and thunderstorms.
A dome of high pressure responsible for the current pleasant conditions will shift to the east and southeast, allowing a plume of moisture to return and shift across the forecast area.
Thursday will start with warmer and more humid conditions, but most of the day should stay dry. A weather disturbance could bring the first of many chances for showers and thunderstorms to the area as early as Thursday afternoon.
Scattered storms are most likely in the western part of the Kansas City forecast area, and severe weather is not expected.
Temperatures are expected to be around 86 degrees, slightly above the average of 82 degrees for this time of year in Kansas City.
Some storms could linger into Friday morning, but much of the day should be a reset as heat and humidity build again, setting up another round of storms with a better chance for a few stronger ones Friday evening.
The Storm Prediction Center, part of the National Weather Service, has placed most of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri under a marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) of severe storms.
Temperatures on Friday are expected to be around 85 degrees.
On-and-off showers and thunderstorms are expected this weekend into early next week. Most of the storms are not expected to be severe, but rain and clouds could be widespread at times.
Temperatures should run mainly in the mid- to upper 80s, with some low 90s possible if clouds and rain don’t hold temperatures down, the weather service said.
“Some uncomfortably humid conditions may prevail next week with heat index values possibly climbing into the mid and upper 90s at times by mid-week,” the weather service said.
