Tornadoes roll through KC, residents without power after storms

Some Kansas cities could be in for a “particularly dangerous situation” as severe thunderstorms potentially pass through the Kansas City area Monday evening.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service predicted storms starting as early as 3 p.m. just west of Topeka. Storms are expected to hit the Kansas City metro around 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center issued a tornado watch for areas in Iowa, Kansas and Missouri until 10 p.m. Monday. Forecasters said “intense supercell thunderstorms” that may include a few “intense tornadoes,” wind gusts up to 80 mph and large hail.

Portions of northeast Kansas into southeast Nebraska are under a tornado watch that the weather service labeled a “particularly dangerous situation,” meaning forecasters see an elevated risk for strong tornadoes.

Over 55,000 without power across KC metro

The number of residents without power continued to climb Monday night as storms passed through the Kansas City metro.

Evergy reported nearly 56,000 customers without power around 10:30 p.m.

In Kansas City, Kansas, over 8,000 residents were without power, according to the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities.

In Independence, around 100 residents were without power, according to Independence Power and Light.

Damage reported in Lawrence

A wooden play set broke and rolled 10 yards around 8:50 p.m. in Lawrence after storms rolled through the area, according to the city’s emergency manager, the National Weather Service said.

Tornado warning issued in Braymer

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning in Ray, Carroll, Caldwell and Livingston counties until 10:45 p.m.

Just before 10:10 p.m., forecasters located a storm “capable of producing a tornado” over Braymer, the weather service said.

The storm moved east at 50 mph, according to the tornado warning.

Cities impacted include Braymer, Tina, Ludlow, Avalon and Dawn.

Tree partially down near Kauffman, Arrowhead stadiums

An emergency manager in Jackson County reported a tree “Partially over Stadium Drive,” near Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums, just after 9:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Potential tornado moves toward Rayville

The National Weather Service indicated a storm “capable of producing a tornado” near Rayville just after 10 p.m.

The storm is moving east at 60 mph, the weather service said.

Tornado located over Spring Hill

The National Weather Service indicated a storm “capable producing a tornado” over Pleasant Hill at 10 p.m.

The storm is moving east at 50 mph, the weather service said.

Cities impacted include Pleasant Hill, Lake Winnebago, Kingsville, Baldwin Park and Strasburg.

Radar indicates tornado near Wood Heights

The National Weather Service’s radar indicated a tornado near Wood Heights just before 10 p.m.

The tornado moved east at 60 mph, the weather service said.

Forecasters said mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed, the weather service said. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles is expected.

Cities impacted include Excelsior Springs, Richmond, Orrick, Norborne, Hardin, Henrietta, Wood Heights, Rayville and Stet.

Cass, Johnson counties placed under tornado warnings in Missouri

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning in Cass and Johnson counties until 10:15 p.m.

Forecasters located a severe thunderstorm over Raymore, which eventually moved toward Lake Winnebago, the weather service said.

Cities impacted include Raymore, Pleasant Hill, Peculiar, Lake Winnebago, Kingsville, Baldwin Park and Strasburg.

Tornado warning issued in Jackson, Clay counties

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning in four Missouri counties — Clay, Ray, Carroll and Jackson counties — until 10:30 p.m.

Forecasters located a severe thunderstorm near Excelsior Springs around 9:0 p.m., moving east at 55 mph, the weather service said.

Cities impacted by the warning include Excelsior Springs, Richmond, Orrick, Norborne, Hardin, Henrietta, Crystal Lakes, Sibley, Woods Heights, Rayville, Camden, Fleming, Prathersville and Stet.

More power outages roll in as storms move out of metro

Tens of thousands of residents across the Kansas City metro are without power around 9:45 p.m. Monday evening as storms continue to move through the area.

Evergy reported nearly 32,000 outages across the metro. Around 10,000 residents are without power near Overland Park and around 4,000 are without power near Kansas City.

In Topeka, around 1,000 are without power, and will experience delayed restoration times, according to Evergy.

In Kansas City, Kansas, over 10,000 customers are without power, according to the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities.

In Independence, around 100 people are without power, according to Independence Power and Light.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for north-central counties in Missouri

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning in several north-central Missouri counties until 10:30 p.m.

Daviess, Grundy, Ray Carroll, Caldwell, Lafayette and Livingston counties were placed under the severe thunderstorm warning, according to the weather service.

A line of severe thunderstorms were located near Pattonsburg and Spring Hill around 9:35 p.m., moving east at 45 mph the weather service said.

Cities impacted by the warning include Excelsior Springs, Chillicothe, Oak Grove, Trenton, Richmond, Odessa, Lexington, Lawson, Hamilton, Gallatin, Braymer, Orrick, Wellington, Norborne, Polo, Hardin, Jamesport, Breckenridge, Henrietta and Crystal Lakes.

Thousands without power as storms rolls through KC metro

Thousands of customers are without power Monday evening as severe thunderstorms blow through the Kansas City region.

According to Evergy’s power outage map, over 12,000 customers are without power around 9:30 p.m.

In Manhattan, Kansas, nearly 3,000 residents are without power, according to Evergy. Near Topeka, around 1,500 customers are without power. Around 400 residents are without power in Edgerton, along with around 150 residents near Shawnee.

In Kansas City, Kansas, around 7,000 residents are without power in the city a storms pass through the region, according to Kansas City Board of Public Utilities. The highest concentration of outages are in east Wyandotte County.

No outages have been reported in Independence.

Wind gusts reach over 80 mph in Johnson County

As severe storms pass through the Kansas City metro, one Johnson County city recorded wind gusts over 80 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Emergency management in Gardner reported wind gusts of 84 mph in the city just before 9:15 p.m., the weather service said.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued in Kansas City

The National Weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning in several northwest and central Missouri counties until 10:15 p.m. Monday.

Cass, Buchanan, Clinton, Clay, Ray, Caldwell, Platte and Jackson counties were placed under the severe thunderstorm warning, the weather service said.

Storms could produce up to 70 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail, according to the severe thunderstorm warning.

Cities impacted by the warning include Kansas City, Independence, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Leawood, Raytown, Liberty, Gladstone, Grandview, Belton, Prairie Village, Raymore, Grain Valley, Excelsior Springs, Cameron, Smithville, Kearney, Pleasant Hill, Greenwood and Peculiar.

Weather Service updates tornado watches

As thunderstorms reach the Kansas City metro Monday, the threat for severe weather continues.

Thunderstorms have “largely consolidated into a squall line,” Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Severe winds remain likely, along with isolated, brief tornadoes, in east Kansas and west Missouri, according to the weather service.

‘Destructive storms’ could hit Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Johnson counties

Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Johnson and Platte counties could experience “destructive storms” as 80 mph winds and nickel-sized hail hit the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Emergency management in the area said “flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter.”

Damage to roofs, windows, vehicles and trees is expected, the weather service said. Power outages are likely.

Wyandotte, Johnson counties placed under severe thunderstorm warning

The National Weather Service placed several northeast Kansas counties and Platte County in Missouri under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9:45 p.m. Monday.

In Kansas, Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Johnon counties were placed under the warning, the weather service said.

Storms were located along a line near Globe just before 8:50 p.m., traveling east at 60 mph, according to the thunderstorm warning. Storms may produce nickel-sized hail and 70 mph wind gusts.

Damage to trees, mobile homes, roofs and outbuildings is possible, the weather service said.

Cities impacted by the warning include Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee, Lenexa, Leavenworth, Leawood, Prairie Village, Gardner, Lansing, Merriam, Mission, Bonner Springs, De Soto, Parkville, Spring Hill, Tonganoxie, Platte City, Basehor, Edwardsville and Fairway.

Flood warning issued for Stranger Creek in Leavenworth County

The National Weather service issued a flood warning for Stranger Creek, near Tonganoxie, as severe storms pass through the area Monday.

Forecasters predict minor flooding from Tuesday morning to Wednesday afternoon, the weather service said. Low-lying farmland along the creek may be impacted by flooding.

“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the weather service said. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”

Tornado touches down near Blue Rapids, Kansas

Lawrence, Ottawa placed under severe thunderstorm warning

Kansas counties just outside the Kansas City metro were placed under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9:15 p.m. Monday as storms move east toward Kansas City, according to the National Weather Service.

Parts of Franklin, Jefferson, Shawnee, Douglas and Osage counties were placed under the warning, the weather service said.

Forecasters located severe thunderstorms along a line near Berryton, moving east at 60 mph, the weather service said. Storms could bring wind gusts up to 70 mph and nickel-sized hail.

Cities impacted by the warning include eastern Topeka, Lawrence, Ottawa, Baldwin City, Carbondale, Valley Falls, Oskaloosa, Tecumseh, Eudora, Richland, Wellsville, Overbrook, Lyndon, Centropolis, Perry, McLouth, Pomona, Meriden, Scranton and Ozawkie.

Wind gusts reach over 60 mph in St. Joseph, Topeka

Monday’s storms have produced wind gusts over 60 mph in some cities just outside the Kansas City metro, according to the National Weather Service.

At 8:13 p.m., wind gusts of 61 mph were recorded at the St. Joseph airport, the weather service said.

In Topeka, wind gusts of 65 mph were recorded at 8:21 p.m., according to the weather service.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued in Buchanan, Platte counties

Several counties in northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri were placed under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

In Kansas, parts of Doniphan and Atchison counties were placed under the warning, the weather service said. In Missouri, parts of Buchanan and Platte counties are affected.

Forecasters located a severe thunderstorm near Nortonville at 8:15 p.m., moving east at 30 mph, the weather service said.

Storms could produce 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail, the severe thunderstorm warning said.

Cities impacted by the warning include Atchison, Lewis and Clark Village, Doniphan and De Kalb. See the full list of cities placed under the warning here.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued in St. Joseph

Doniphan County in Kansas and several counties in northwest Missouri were placed under a severe thunderstorm warning until 8:45 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

In Missouri, Buchanan, Clinton, Andrew and DeKalb counties were placed under the warning.

Storms were located along a line near Oregon moving east at 65 mph, the weather service said. The storms could produce quarter-sized hail and 70 mph wind gusts.

Cities impacted by the warning include St. Joseph, Cameron, Savannah, Plattsburgh, Gower, Maysville, Amazonia, Lewis and Clark Village and Easton. See the full list of impacted cities here.

National Weather Service provides evening update on severe storms

The National Weather Service in Topeka issued an update on severe storms passing through the region just before 8 p.m. Monday.

A line of severe storms will continue east through east-central Kansas throughout the evening, the weather service said, potentially bringing winds up to 80 mph, “very large hail,” and tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued in Topeka, Emporia

Several Kansas counties just outside the Kansas City metro were placed under a severe thunderstorm warning until 8:45 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters located a line of severe storms near Alma, moving east at 65 mph, the weather service said.

The weather service predicted hail damage to vehicles, and wind damage to roofs, siding and trees.

Tornado warning issued in Worth, Nodaway counties

Southwest Worth and north Nodaway counties were placed under a tornado warning until 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Just before 7:40 p.m., forecasters located a storm capable of producing a tornado over Burlington Junction, moving northwest at 35 mph, the weather service said.

Cities impacted by the tornado warning are Maryville, Burlington Junction, Hopkins, Sheridan, Parnell, Clearmont, Elmo, Pickering and Quitman.

Tornado warning issued in Lyon County, Kansas

A tornado warning was issued in several Kansas counties just outside the Kansas City metro until 8:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters located a severe thunderstorm “capable of producing a tornado” near Bushong, moving east at 45 mph, the weather service said. A tornado and quarter-sized hail are possible.

Cities impacted by the tornado warning include Allen, Admire and Bushong.

Northeast Kansas, northwest Missouri counties placed under severe thunderstorm warning

Three counties in Kansas and Missouri were placed under a tornado warning until 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms were located along a line near Rulo, Nebraska, moving east at 55 mph, the weather service said.

Storms may produce 70 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail, according to the severe thunderstorm warning.

Cities impacted by the warning include Wathena, Highland, Troy, Amazonia, Denton, Doniphan, Severance, Leona, Fanning and Bendena.

Tornado warning issued in Worth, Harrison counties

A tornado warning was issued in Worth and northwest Harrison counties until 8:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters located a severe storm “capable of producing a tornado” near Grant City just after 7:20 p.m. moving northeast at 20 mph, the weather service said.

Cities impacted by the tornado warning include Grant City, Irena, Worth, Allendale and Hatfield.

Tornado warning issued near Fairfax, Tarkio

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning until 7:45 p.m. in Atchison County.

Forecasters located a severe storm “capable of producing a tornado” near Fairfax just before 7 p.m., according to the tornado warning. The storm moved northeast at 40 mph.

The storm could produce a tornado and ping pong-ball sized hail, the weather service said. Cities impacted by the warning include Tarkio, Fairfax and Blanchard.

Tornado warning issued in Gentry, Nodaway counties

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning in northwest Gentry and northeast Nodaway counties until 7:15 p.m.

Forecasters located a tornado “capable of producing a tornado” near Ravenwood and Maryville, moving east at 40 mph, according to the weather service.

The storm moving through the region could produce a tornado and golf ball-sized hail, according to the tornado warning.

Cities impacted by the warning include Maryville, Grant City, Ravenwood, Irena, Sheridan, Parnell, Pickering and Worth.

Weather service updates tornado watches for KC metro

The National Weather Service issued an updated tornado watch lasting until 1 a.m. in the Kansas City metro just after 6 p.m. Monday.

The watch included counties in east-central Kansas and west-central Missouri, the weather service said.

The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center indicated tornadoes, including a “couple of intense tornadoes,” are possible. Large hail and strong wind gusts are also possible.

The watch was updated as a line of supercell storms moves ahead of a cold front in the region, the weather service said.

In Kansas, counties included in the watch are Anderson, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Lyon, Miami, Shawnee and Wyandotte.

In Missouri, counties included are Bates, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis, Platte and Ray.

Tornado moves toward Skidmore, Mound City

A tornado was located near Skidmore and Mound City around 6 p.m. Monday after moving through Fairfax and Tarkio, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service’s radar indicated a tornado and 2-inch hail near Skidmore and Mound City moving northeast at 45 mph.

Cities in Holt and Nodaway counties were impacted by the warning, including Maryville, Burlington Junction, Skidmore, Pickering, Arkoe and Quitman.

Tornado touches down near Fairfax, Tarkio

The National Weather Service’s radar indicated a “damaging tornado” near Fairfax, Missouri, around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.

“This is a particularly dangerous situation. Take cover now!” The tornado warning said.

Forecasters said residents in the area are in a “life-threatening situation,” until 6:30 p.m.

“Complete destruction is possible,” the weather service said.

Cities impacted by the warning include Fairfax, Craig, Corning, Maryville, Burlington, Junction, Skidmore, Pickering Arkoe and Quitman.

Tornado in Nebraska spurs warnings in northeast Missouri

A tornado touched down near Verdon, Nebraska, Monday, spurring a tornado warning in northeast Missouri, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters placed southeast Atchison and northwest Holt counties under a tornado warning until 6 p.m. as the tornado near Verdon moved northeast at 50 mph, the weather service said.

Cities included in the warning include Mound City, Fairfax, Craig, Bigelow and Corning, according to the tornado warning. Indian Cave State Park is also included.

Tornado watch issued in northeast Kansas, northwest Missouri counties

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch until 10 p.m. for counties in northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri, according to the weather service’s Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters predicted storms in the area have a high probability to produce tornadoes and severe wind, the weather service said. There is a moderate likelihood of EF 2 tornadoes and severe hail.

Kansas counties included in the tornado watch are Atchison and Doniphan, according to the weather service. In Missouri, Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Daviess, DeKalb, Gentry, Harrison, Holt, Nodaway and Worth counties are included.
