Tornado, hail and flooding warnings issued in Kansas City area Sunday evening
Hail, thunderstorms and a tornado warning are rolling into the Kansas City area.
The Kansas City area is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 7 p.m. A couple tornadoes are possible to form with wind speeds as high as 75 mph. Hail possibilities are scattered throughout the area and could be as big as two inches, according to the National Weather Service.
A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Overland Park, Olathe and Lenexa until 4:45 p.m., according to a post from the National Weather Service on X. Wind up to 70 mph and quarter sized hail are possible.
A tornado warning is in effect south of Kansas City including Belton, Peculiar and Greenwood until 6:15 p.m. Penny sized hail is possible, according to the NWS.
Heavy rainfall that can lead to flash flooding is also possible, especially north, northeast and northwest of the metro. That area could see an accumulation between 2 and 4 inches due to the several rounds of storms in succession, which could cause flooding, according to the NWS.
A flood watch is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Monday. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is expected in the metro overnight.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to seep into Monday, with the possibility of storms before 1 p.m., and between that and 4 p.m., according to the forecast. It will be warmer, with a high of 79 and wind gusts of up to 29 mph.
Temperatures are expected to drop to an overnight low around 46 on Monday, bringing with it a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Spring temperatures will be in full swing after that, with sunny skies and temperatures between 44 overnight and the high 60s during the day for the rest of the week.
