One dead after shooting behind popular KC burger joint
One man is dead after shooting in a Town Topic parking lot Sunday morning.
Off-duty police officers working at the Town Topic at 2021 Broadway Blvd, heard several rounds of gunshots around 4:15 a.m. coming from the parking lot. They saw several groups of individuals involved in an altercation that escalated to shots being fired, according to Alayna Gonzalez, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
The off-duty officers on scene told dispatch a shooting occurred and gave details on the people and vehicles believed to be involved who were fleeing the area. Officers who responded to the scene helped locate and detain several individuals for questioning, according to Gonzalez.
One off-duty officer detained an armed individual, while the other focused on a man who was hit by gunfire in the parking lot. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Gonzalez.
This marks the 38th homicide this year, compared to 48 this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star which includes police shootings.
