From spring chill to near-record heat: Kansas City set for weather whiplash

After a cool start to the week, Kansas City is in for weather whiplash as temperatures surge toward record highs later this week under mostly dry skies, according to the National Weather Service.

After temperatures peaked at 78 degrees on Sunday, Monday will be 30 to 40 degrees cooler.

“That actually gets us close to, or just below normal, with highs in the middle 50s expected across the area,” the weather service said. The daily average high temperature for this time of year is 58 degrees.

A few sprinkles or a brief light rain shower will be possible Monday evening, mainly across north-central and northeastern Missouri and in central Missouri, but “most folks won’t see anything, and even folks that do may only see a few drops with a trace precipitation amounts possible.”

A warmup starts Tuesday, with temperatures being 10 to15 degrees warmer than Monday, climbing to around 67 degrees, the weather service said.

Unseasonably hot temperatures are expected on Wednesday and Thursday, with Thursday’s temperatures forecast to run more than 30 degrees above normal again, the weather service said.

The record daily high for Wednesday is 90 degrees, set in 1907. A high temperature of 83 degrees is forecast for Wednesday, so breaking that record is unlikely, the weather service said.

With a high temperature of 89 degrees expected on Thursday, the weather service said the record high for that date of 85 degrees, set in 1991, will likely be broken.

Kansas City will see a sharp warm-up later this week, with forecast highs near records on Thursday, followed by a cold front bringing showers and then cooler weekend temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

Whether that record is broken will depend on when a cold front moves into the area, bringing the metro its next chance for meaningful precipitation, the weather service said.

That front could bring additional showers and a few thunderstorms Thursday evening into Friday.

Temperatures will be considerably cooler for the weekend, in the 50s for Friday, near 60 for Saturday, and the 60s to near 70 for Sunday, the weather service said.
