Spring tease, then a wintry turn possible: Kansas City’s weekend in for a twist

Kansas City will flirt with springlike weather early this weekend, then Sunday could turn wild as a powerful storm brings strong, gusty winds, scattered thunderstorms and possibly a short burst of snow late in the day, according to the National Weather Service.

Mostly sunny skies are expected on Friday, with temperatures climbing to the upper 50s in the afternoon, a few degrees above the average of 54 degrees for this time of year.

Parts of northeastern Missouri could see a brief bout of light rain or snow Friday night as a small weather system passes through. Little to no meaningful impacts are expected, according to the weather service.

It will be even warmer on Saturday, as temperatures in the low to mid-70s are expected, especially south of the Missouri River. The air will also feel more humid.

Rain could change over to snow

The big story in the forecast is the strong storm system that will move into the area late Saturday night, impacting the region on Sunday, the weather service said.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of an intense cold front on Sunday, the weather service said. Some of the stronger storms may produce small hail or gusty winds, mainly east of U.S. 65.

The cold front is expected to move through the region on Sunday afternoon.

“Once the cold front sweeps through the region, precipitation may change over to snow,” the weather service said. Precise snow accumulations are uncertain, but minor accumulations are possible.

“Strong winds are also expected behind the cold front, gusting to near 50 mph, reducing visibility and driving wind chills below zero by Monday morning,” the weather service said.

A powerful weather system is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Kansas City area Sunday, which could turn to a burst of snow as temperatures tumble, the National Weather Service said. Precise snow accumulations are uncertain, but minor accumulations are possible.

Cold weather to linger

There will be a noticeable drop in temperatures, too. Around midnight, temperatures are expected to be around 60 degrees. They are expected to drop rapidly in the afternoon and evening, with readings below freezing after 6 p.m.

In the metro area, wind chills are expected to drop to zero degrees by 6 a.m. Monday, and remain only in the teens in the afternoon and evening. Wind chills will dip to around 10 degrees by Tuesday morning.

“For now, keep an eye on the forecast as we head toward the weekend, as impacts may be possible Sunday afternoon into Monday morning,” the weather service said.

The cold weather is expected to linger into the start of the week. Temperatures are expected to reach 30 degrees on Monday and the mid-40s on Tuesday.

Temperatures rebound to the upper 60s on Wednesday and the upper 70s on Thursday.
