Freezing drizzle could impact KC roads as sub-zero wind chills loom
Kansas City braces for bitter wind chills over the weekend and a chance of freezing drizzle that could impact drivers Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
While some parts of northern Missouri could see snow flurries and accumulation, weather models show snow unlikely for the KC metro. However, temperatures will continue to drop throughout the weekend and bitter cold is expected to hit Kansas City by Saturday night.
Saturday, expect a high temperature near 26 degrees. There is a slight chance of patchy freezing drizzle in the morning and early afternoon across eastern Kansas and western Missouri, according to the weather service.
“If you’re traveling today and see small droplets of water on your windshield, they’re more than likely freezing on roads and walkways,” the weather service said on social media. “Slow down and use extra caution, as just a small amount of freezing drizzle can cause slick roads.”
It will be a cloudy day Saturday with wind gusts up to 18 miles per hour, the forecast shows.
Frigid wind chills hit Kansas City
Then, bitter cold arrives and is expected to last through Monday morning. The brunt of the cold will be Sunday morning, the weather service said.
Saturday night into Sunday morning, wind chill values are forecast between -1 and 9 degrees across the Kansas City metro.
The weather will make for a cold home Kansas City Chiefs game Sunday, with the temperature forecast in the high teens to low 20s around kickoff.
Kansas City could count its blessings, however, since far northern and northeastern Missouri could get wind chill values ranging from -10 t0 -20 degrees Sunday, according to the weather service.
Then next week, temperatures are expected to have a warming trend.
Monday’s high temperature is forecast in the low 40s, and Tuesday’s high is forecast in the low 50s. Kansas City may also see some rain in the middle of next week, the forecast shows.
