Hold on: Strong winds to bring burst of cold air to Kansas City
Kansas City residents should hold on tight to anything not tied down — strong winds are expected on Wednesday, bringing in a burst of much colder air, according to the National Weather Service.
A cold front is moving through the area, bringing gusts of around 35 to 45 mph, with some isolated gusts possibly exceeding 50 mph, the weather service said.
A wind advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday across parts of northeast Kansas and north-central, and northwest Missouri.
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects,” the weather service said. “Tree limbs could be blown down, and a few power outages may result.”
Kansas City has already seen its warmest part of the day. Temperatures reached 50 degrees around 2 a.m. at Kansas City International Airport. They are expected to drop into the upper 30s as the winds steadily usher in colder air, the weather service said.
“Wind chills throughout the day are expected to range from the upper teens (mainly areas near the MO/IA border) to the upper 30s (locations near central MO),” the weather service said.
This week’s weather rollercoaster will continue on Thursday, as temperatures rebound to around 50 degrees, above the average of 43 degrees typical for this time of year. Temperatures will be colder in northern Missouri.
Temperatures will drop again on Friday, rising only into the upper 30s during the day. The trend of colder temperatures continues into the weekend, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s on Saturday. Sunday will be the coldest day in the forecast, with temperatures only climbing into the mid-20s.
A warm-up is expected by the middle of next week.
