Snow removal continues across metro, many crews switching to overnight operations

Roads remain covered and partly covered with snow in the Kansas City metropolitan area Monday evening as the first winter storm of the season winds down.

Winter weather advisories in several counties end at 6 p.m. Monday, according to a morning brief from the National Weather Service.

Preliminary reports indicate areas in the metro received anywhere from around 1 to 5 inches of snow throughout the day, according to a snowfall report from the NWS.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, many highways remain covered or partly covered in snow Monday evening, with a few vehicle crashes slowing traffic in some areas.

In Kansas, highways mostly remain partially covered in snow as plowed snow remains on the roadways and snow blows in, according to KanDrive. Some vehicle crashes are slowing traffic in some areas.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 17 degrees overnight before warming to 35 degrees Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Here’s where road conditions and snow removal efforts lie Monday evening.

City of Kansas City switches to 24/7 plowing operation

Kansas City switched to a 24/7 plowing operation Monday evening, hoping to clear roads within the next 24 to 48 hours, Kansas City Public Works Public Information Officer Ryan McMonigle said in a press release.

The city pretreated roads prior to Monday’s storm, and snowplow teams “are working steadily across the city to keep priority routes passable,” McMonigle said.

Those who utilize street parking in the city are asked to park on the north or west sides of streets, McMonigle said.

Trash, recycling, leaf and brush and bulky item pickup were cancelled Monday and postponed Tuesday, McMonigle said. Services for those with a collection date starting Tuesday will be postponed by one day.

Those with a Monday pickup date will be able to set out extra bags next Monday, McMonigle said.

Anyone planning to catch a flight at Kansas City International Airport may experience plane delays this evening as crews intermittently close the airfield for snow clearing, McMonigle said.

Each clearing will last around 20 minutes, and planes cannot take off or land during the clearing, McMonigle said.

McMonigle said drivers should keep a “safe distance” from plow drivers, slow down, allow extra travel time and use caution on roadways.

Main roads looking ‘much better’ in Leawood

High-traffic roads are looking “much better” in Leawood Monday evening as snow plows continue clearing roadways and treating streets, according to a press release from the city’s Winter Weather Services department.

Plows will work into the morning to make additional passes on roads in Leawood and address “remaining hotspots” such as steep hills and bridges, according to the press release.

The city said drivers should expect icy patches and refreezing for tomorrow’s morning commute.

Other cities to complete overnight operations

Several other cities will be completing overnight snow plow operations, including Overland Park.

At around 6 p.m. Monday, crews were still working to clear the city’s main roads, according to an update posted on the Overland Park Snow Operations Map. Crews will switch to residential streets as soon as the main roadways are cleared, and will continue to work overnight.

In Lenexa, crews fully switched to plowing residential areas around 5 p.m., according to a press release from the city. Crews will switch over at midnight, and continue treating roads before the morning commute.

Snow plow efforts continue in several other cities across the metro Monday evening.
