Kansas City might finally get some rain this week, something residents haven’t seen much of lately. However, the most helpful rain isn’t expected until later in the week, according to the National Weather Service.

The rain will be much welcomed as the metro has only received 3.69 inches of rain since Sept. 1, well below 8.33 inches that is normal for that period. The metro has received only a trace of rain so far this month and has been slipping deeper into drought.

A quick-moving weather system will begin to move through the Kansas City area on Monday, bringing a breezy day with southeast wind gusts of around 25 mph throughout the day.

“Some showers, too, remain on track to push through, but don’t expect too much in the way of needed rainfall amounts,” the weather service said. Not everyone will see rain either.

Areas in central and eastern Missouri are expected to have the best chance of rain. A few thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, but any that do develop are anticipated to remain isolated and sub-severe, the weather service said.

In the metro, there’s about 10% chance of rain in the morning and early afternoon and then a 15% to 20% between 6 p.m. and midnight.

Rainfall totals are expected to be modest, less than .10 of an inch, with most areas trending drier.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 60s on Monday. Areas south of Interstate 70 could see temperatures in the upper 60s.

Lingering clouds over northern Missouri could create a large temperature spread in the area on Tuesday. Areas north of U.S. 36 in northern Missouri could see temperatures in the mid-50s to low 60s, while areas south of the highway are expected to see low 60s to low 70s.

In the metro, temperatures are expected to be in the mid-60s.

“Better chances for widespread and beneficial rainfall remain in the forecast for the latter portions of the week,” the weather service said.

Folks should prepare for a wet second half of the workweek, the weather service said, with rain chances starting Wednesday night and continuing into early Saturday.

The best chances for widespread showers and storms will come on Thursday, the weather service said.

Kansas City’s rain chances go from 20% Wednesday evening to 55% and 60% on Thursday. Rain chances on Friday drop from 60% in the morning to 40% in the afternoon and then 20% in the evening.

The metro has a 38% chance of an inch or more of rain from Thursday through Friday overnight, according to the weather service.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 60s on Wednesday, mid-60s on Thursday, and mid-50s on Friday. Kansas City typically sees temperatures average around 51 degrees this time of year.

Sunny weather is expected to return for the weekend, with temperatures in the low 50s on Saturday and upper 50s on Sunday.
