Dangerously hot, humid weather persists in KC. Here’s when relief is coming
Dangerously hot and humid weather will persist across the Kansas City area, with heat index values expected to soar above 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
A heat advisory is in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday for the metro and east-central and northeast Kansas and central, north-central, northeast, northwest and west-central Missouri.
Meanwhile, the weather service has issued an extreme heat warning, effective until 7 p.m. Tuesday, for Andrew, Atchison, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway, and Worth counties in extreme northwest Missouri, where heat index values as high as 115 degrees are possible.
In the metro, dry and sunny weather will help temperatures climb to around 96 degrees on Monday, with the heat index expected to reach approximately 107 degrees, the weather service said. Typically, Kansas City’s temperature is 89 degrees this time of year.
“Unfortunately, we will not get much relief in the overnight period, with temperatures remaining in the mid- to upper 70s,” the weather service said.
Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to be a degree or two warmer. Heat index values will be similar to Monday’s.
Showers, thunderstorms return to Kansas City’s weather forecast
A cold front is expected to move into the Kansas City area overnight on Tuesday, triggering showers and thunderstorms early Wednesday, which will continue through the afternoon and into the evening.
Moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible, which may lead to flooding. The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed Kansas City and areas north of the metro under a slight risk for excessive rainfall from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.
Areas south of Interstate 70 are under a marginal risk for excessive rainfall.
The front might stall across northern Missouri on Wednesday, which may keep the southern portion of the Kansas City forecast area dry and under excessive heat and humidity
In the metro, temperatures will be closer to average.
Relief from heat, humidity coming
The cold front is expected to finally push through the region from north to south overnight Wednesday.
“Much, much cooler temperatures are forecast to arrive behind the front, with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s for Thursday and mid- to upper 70s for Friday and Saturday (perhaps even lower 70s across northern MO on Saturday),” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
Overnight temperatures will be in the low 60s on Friday and Saturday.
