Hot, humid weather grips Kansas City; Severe storms possible in NW Missouri

It will stay hot and humid in Kansas City on Monday, with temperatures feeling like they’re 100 degrees or higher, according to the National Weather Service.

A heat advisory is in effect for metro area and parts of Kansas and Missouri until 7 p.m. as hot temperatures and high humidity may lead to heat illnesses.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s in the metro, with heat index values as high as 103 degrees. Typically, Kansas City’s temperatures are 86 degrees this time of year.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the weather service said.

Those headed outside are urged to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing, and try to limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends those working outdoors to schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded area.

Strong, severe storms in northwest Missouri

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon into the evening in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas. The storms will be focused along a weak front generally northwest of a line from Holt to Nodaway counties in Missouri.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed the far northwest corner of Missouri at a slight risk of severe storms, which is the second tier on a five-point scale of severe weather risk. Parts of the Kansas City Northland are under a marginal risk.

Damaging winds and locally heavy rainfall are possible with the strongest storms, which are expected to develop after 3 p.m. near the hottest part of the day, the weather service said. Areas northwest of a line from St. Joseph to Bethany are at a slight risk for excessive rainfall.

The Kansas City area has a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Showers, storms remain in Kansas City’s forecast

The storms might continue into early Tuesday, with a chance of more rain and thunderstorms Tuesday evening into Wednesday, mainly along and north of Interstate 70, the weather service said.

The best chance for strong storms is late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Strong winds and locally heavy rainfall are possible with the strongest storm, the weather service said.

There is some uncertainty about the storms on Tuesday evening. Whether the storms are able to develop will depend on whether the weather can reset after the morning storms, the weather service said.

Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to be in the mid-90s.

Hot, humid weather lingers in metro

Hot and humid weather continues for the second half of the week, with temperatures remaining in the mid-90s into the weekend.

There are multiple chances of rain for the rest of the week and into the weekend as weather disturbances move in from the west, the weather service said.

The amount of rain and storms will depend on an area of high pressure to the southeast. If the ridge moves west, the weather could be drier. If it moves east, rain chances go up, the weather service said.

The extended forecast indicates that cooler conditions could be on the way, but there is uncertainty whether this shift in weather pattern will fully manifest itself, the weather service said.
