Extreme heat advisory issued for Kansas City this weekend. How to prepare
An intense heat wave is headed for Kansas City this weekend as temperatures soar into the upper 90s with humidity that could make it feel like triple-digits.
Hazardous heat is expected Friday afternoon into Saturday, when heat index values could climb to 100-106 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
A heat advisory is in effect, and meteorologists advise people to take proper precautions—stay hydrated, wear light colored, loose fitting clothes and avoid prolonged exposure outdoors.
People should not leave pets or people alone in a closed car, and should check on vulnerable neighbors, especially those without air conditioning.
“Please practice heat safety if you are doing anything outdoors today,” the weather service said in a Facebook post.

Friday’s high temperature is expected to be near 95 degrees with a heat index value as high as 104 degrees. The overnight low is expected to hover around 80 degrees Friday, providing little relief from the heat, meteorologists said in a Friday forecast discussion.
Saturday, the high temperature is forecast around 95 degrees with a heat index value near 102 degrees.
While gusty winds may pick up during the day Friday and Saturday, they will act more like a blast furnace than a cool breeze, meteorologists said.
Conditions could improve slightly by Sunday if a low-pressure system develops in western Nebraska, which might ease the heat marginally, meteorologists said. But if the system fails to form or shifts course, dangerously hot conditions could persist across the Kansas City metro.
On Sunday, the high temperature is forecast slightly cooler, near 93 degrees.
By the beginning of next week, temperatures will cool slightly, but are expected to remain in the low to mid 90s, according to the weather service.
