Don’t let the mild early-June weather fool you. Kansas City’s heating up for the summer — and fast.

Jonathan Kurtz, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Kansas City, said it’s coming soon.

“I think we’re going to see our first little glimpse of summer at least by Wednesday,” he said.

Kansas City is shaping up to have a hot summer like 2024, when temperatures reached 100 and heat indexes soared to 110 degrees.

With many Pride activities, concerts and festivals on the calendar, Kansas Citians will have to decide when they want to brave the heat.

Kurtz said spring 2025 was fairly typical for the metro. From late March through June, a pattern of thunderstorms rolling through the area means now some rivers are close to flooding. On the flip side, this means drought conditions are unlikely, at least through the next month or two, according to Kurtz.

What will the weather be like this summer?

During June, July and August, Kansas City is likely to have temperatures above average, according to the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center.

For the whole season, there is a 33% to 40% chance of higher-than-average temperatures.

Kurtz explained, “It’s mainly because we’ve got quite a bit of dry soil conditions across much of the country, even though we’ve had a lot of rain recently, which usually helps trend us more towards warmer temperatures.”

Kansas City is at a moderate risk for dangerously hot temperatures from Sunday, June 15, through Tuesday, June 17, along with a chance of flooding.

Here are the typical temperatures for downtown Kansas City on various dates during the summer:

  • June 15: high of 86, low of 67

  • July 4: high of 89, low of 71

  • July 15: high of 90, low of 72

  • Aug. 1: high of 91, low of 72

  • Aug. 15: high of 89, low of 70

  • Sept. 1: high of 85, low of 66

What is the hottest time in the Kansas City area?

According to climate data from 1991 to 2020, the highest high temperatures occur from July 25 to 30. The average high is 88.8 degrees during that time frame.

Those average temperatures slowly drop off after that. The average daily high dips below 85 degrees Aug. 29 and then under 80 on Sept. 15.

What is this week’s forecast?

The Kansas City area is expected to experience summer-like heat by midweek, before rain comes during the weekend, the NWS predicts.

Starting with a high of 79 degrees on Monday, by Wednesday temperatures are expected to rise to 90, which would be the hottest day of 2025 so far.

By Thursday morning, the likelihood of precipitation increases, with up to a 40% chance of rain every six hours through Sunday. Temperatures are expected to stay in the mid-80s to round out the week.
