After enjoying a warm and mostly sunny start to the weekend in Kansas City, people should be weather aware by the beginning of next week when severe storms are possible.

Meteorologists are tracking weather patterns that could bring severe weather by late Sunday into Monday, the National Weather Service forecast shows.

While much of Sunday will remain dry, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop from 2-6 p.m., mainly across eastern Kansas before pushing into western Missouri.

Some of these storms could become severe, with the greatest risks being damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.

The high Sunday is expected to be near 80 degrees during a windy day with gusts reaching 23 mph, the forecast predicts.

Monday poses a higher risk for severe weather across much of the region, meteorologists said in a Saturday morning forecast discussion.

A powerful storm system will bring widespread instability and moisture, creating conditions favorable for supercells.

All severe weather hazards are possible Monday, mostly in the afternoon. the weather service predicts. That includes the possibility for tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. Flash floods may also become a concern, the weather service said since heavy rain is expected Monday and Tuesday.

Monday’s high is expected to be near 81 degrees, and the overnight low is forecast near 62 degrees.

Tuesday could see additional rounds of storms as a cold front pushes through, though the timing and severity are still uncertain.

Tuesday, the high is expected to be near 74 degrees and the overnight low is forecast near 50 degrees.
