Kansas City braces for its hottest day of year. When will storms bring relief?

Above-normal temperatures will continue throughout the rest of the week in Kansas City, with Wednesday being the hottest, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid- to upper 80s, the weather service said.

“A few areas in eastern KS/western MO may see the low 90s, however increased cloud coverage could keep highs in upper 80s,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

Typically, Kansas City’s temperatures are in the mid-70s this time of year.

“High temps look to mainly stay in the upper 70s to mid-80s through the rest of the week,” the weather service said.

Storm brewing in Kansas City’s forecast

A cold front is expected to move through the area on Thursday, which will have minimal impact on temperatures.

The weather service said there might be fire weather concerns in northwestern Missouri and eastern Kansas due to strong winds and low humidity on Thursday afternoon.

A stalled front could bring the first of multiple chances for showers and storms starting Friday and continuing through the first half of next week.

Areas east of Interstate 35 will have a favorable environment for storms Friday afternoon, but central Missouri will have a higher chance for showers and thunderstorms. The weather service said that while some storms might be strong, severe weather is not expected in the Kansas City area.

Weekend gets off to dry start, but storms return

The weather will be mostly quiet on Saturday, with temperatures climbing to the low 80s under sunny skies, the weather service said.

The chance for rain returns overnight Saturday and continues into early next week.

“In spite of the rainy days ahead, temperatures mainly stay a few degrees above normal, ranging in the mid-70s to low 80s from Saturday into next week.”
