Kansas City starts frosty Tuesday. Could it be last freeze of the season?

The Kansas City area got off to a cold start Tuesday morning, but if history is any indication, it might be the last one of the season.

“Kansas City is right on time!” the National Weather Service said on social media, noting that temperatures fell to 31 degrees at 5 a.m. “The date for the average last freeze in KC is April 8. That’s today!”

There is not another freeze in the extended forecast, the weather service said. However, the latest freeze on record is May 6, 1944.

“So, we may not be out of the woods yet,” the weather service said.

The metro and most of the surrounding area are under a freeze warning until 9 a.m. because of the sub-freezing temperatures. The damaging frost and freeze could kill crops and other sensitive plants. It could also damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Rain, thunderstorms return in Kansas City’s forecast

Despite the chilly start, temperatures are expected to return to the mid-50s to the lower 60s in the afternoon.

In the metro, temperatures will climb to around 63 degrees, just shy of the average of 64 degrees that Kansas City sees this time of year. Overnight, temperatures will remain in the 50s, well above the 41 degrees typical for this date.

There will also be a slight chance — 15-25% — of a few showers overnight into Wednesday morning.

The afternoon is expected to remain dry and mild as temperatures climb into the mid-70s, weather service said. The dry weather continues overnight.

There is a better chance for rain showers and maybe some thunderstorms on Thursday. While parts of the Kansas City area face a 20-40% chance, the metro has a 10% chance of rain, according to the weather service. Temperatures will be near 70 degrees.

Dry, warm weather expected into the weekend

After dipping to 65 degrees on Friday, temperatures are expected to warm up for the weekend, according to the weather service.

Temps on Saturday will be around 71 degrees and 83 degrees on Sunday.

A cold front will move through the area Sunday into Monday, but the metro will remain dry. The cold front will only temper temperatures at the beginning of the week, dropping them to the upper 70s on Monday.
