Rain showers, thunderstorms possible in Kansas City area. Will any of them be severe?
Better keep that rain gear handy. It will be a rainy start to the weekend in Kansas City, according to the National Weather Service.
An active weather pattern is expected to continue across the region with a chance for light rain to develop as early as Thursday afternoon, the weather service said.
“Expect rain chances to increase (Thursday) afternoon across the southern portions of our (Kansas City forecast area) with 30-50% probability of precipitation remaining mainly south of the greater Kansas City area and only 15-25% from St. Joseph to Kansas City,” the weather service said.
Temperatures will be in the upper 50s, which is slightly below the average of 62 degrees for this time of year in Kansas City.
Widespread rain, few thunderstorms possible in Kansas City’s forecast
Rain chances continue overnight in the Kansas City area, with widespread rain likely on Friday. The weather service said the metro area’s chance of precipitation increases from 30% after midnight to 60% by noon. Then, KC’s rain chances jump to 90% by 6 p.m.
“Widespread showers and a few thunderstorms are expected Friday into Saturday,” the weather service said. “No severe weather is expected.”
The rain is expected to persist in the area overnight Saturday into Sunday. The weather service stated that the rain could cause river and creek levels, which have already increased due to storms earlier in the week, to rise even further. Some creeks and rivers could reach minor flood stage by Friday night into Saturday.
Colder air is expected to move into the area, with temperatures expected to fall to around freezing on Sunday morning. There’s a chance for snow to mix with rain briefly, the weather service said.
“The main concern with the colder temperatures will be the vegetation and (people) would need to consider covering any sensitive vegetation particularly on Tuesday morning which appears to be the coldest temperatures this week with forecasted lows in the mid-20s to near 30,” the weather service said.
Temperatures will spring back rather quickly by mid-week, as morning temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 30s to mid-40s on Wednesday. Afternoon temperatures will be near 70 degrees.
