A judge has ordered Michael Wheeler, the evangelical Christian preacher and runner famous locally as “KC Superman,” to stay away from Westport after finding him guilty of trespassing again.

The 73-year-old Wheeler had been cited twice last year for trespassing in Westport, once at 9 a.m. Sept. 13 at an unspecified address on Archibald Street and the second time at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at March’s Sun Fresh Market, 4001 Mill Street, according to court documents.

Kansas City Municipal Court Judge Michael C. Heffernon found Wheeler guilty of trespassing at the grocery store during a bench trial Friday, according to court documents. Wheeler also pleaded guilty to the second charge of trespassing.

Heffernon sentenced Wheeler to 5 and 10 days in jail, but suspended both sentences, and ordered Wheeler to serve two years of probation and to stay away from Westport.

Last year, Wheeler served two days in Vernon County jail on six trespassing convictions from 2020, 2022 and 2023. Kansas City contracts sheriff departments in Vernon and Johnson counties in Missouri to house people charged or serving short sentences for municipal offenses.

Wheeler was previously convicted of trespassing charges from March 18, 2020 and Nov. 18, 2022. He was convicted last September on four separate trespassing charges related to incidents on June 26, 2023, July 23, 2023, Aug. 18, 2023, and Sept. 1, 2023.

Five of the six charges alleged that he trespassed within Westport, known primarily as an entertainment and nightlife district.

Wheeler was initially to serve a total of four days in jail, according to court records. But a judge amended his sentence to run concurrently, allowing him to be released after two days.

He was released on Sept. 12 and the next morning he was cited again for trespassing in Westport.

Wheeler is known for his practice of running through Kansas City with a red cape and Superman-style costume with a T-shirt that sometimes had a big “S” emblazoned on it, at other times “Jesus.” He often is carrying a football.
