With temperatures tumbling below freezing early Thursday, It might be hard to believe that winter is finally over in Kansas City.

But as of 4:01 a.m., Kansas City sprung into the next season.

“WELCOME TO SPRING!!!!” the National Weather Service said on social media, with the hashtag ByeeeWinter.

However, temperatures dipped to 28.9 degrees at Kansas City International Airport shortly before 8 a.m., and the wind chill was 20 degrees.

As drier air moves into the region, clearing out the skies, temperatures will warm up to the low to mid-50s, which is slightly cooler than usual, the weather service said. Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures of 57 degrees this time of year.

Temperatures will continue to warm on Friday, reaching the mid-60s, according to the weather service.

“However, that will come with breezy conditions and elevated fire weather concerns,” the weather service said.

Thunderstorms, large hail in Kansas City forecast

Temperatures will remain in the mid-60s on Saturday as the metro will be under sunny skies. Winds will be light, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Late Saturday into Sunday, another low-pressure system will move through the area, bringing a high chance of showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said.

The weather service said there is potential for a strong storm or two, with large hail being the main threat.

The rain will likely end by sunrise Sunday, but a few showers could linger until noon. Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 60s in the afternoon.

The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed Kansas City and areas to the south at a marginal risk of severe weather.

“Temperatures look to remain above seasonal normals into next week with the potential for precipitation coming next Wednesday into Thursday,” the weather service said. “The brunt of the showers look to stay to our south over southern MO.”
