Severe cold, below 0 wind chills in KC area forecast. Here’s when it could snow again
Bitter-cold wind chills are in the forecast Thursday morning around the Kansas City metro after a winter storm brought just above 2 inches of snow to much of the area Wednesday.
Those making morning commutes should be prepared for below zero and single-digit wind chills Thursday and Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.
Just after 6:30 a.m. Thursday, the temperature was 0 degrees in Kansas City with a wind chill value of -12 degrees.
The bitter cold has prompted some KC area school districts to announce closures and delays Thursday.
While Thursday will be a reprieve from the snow, allowing crews more time to clear roads, there’s another chance for a wintry mix on Friday, the weather service said. Areas mostly north of Missouri 36 Highway will be affected, with up to half an inch of rain turning into snow possible, the weather service predicts.
A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the metro area due to dangerous cold temperatures. Wind chill values could range from 0 to -15 degrees in some areas, according to the NWS alert.
More snow is possible, says KC weekend forecast
The transition from rain into snow is possible late Friday into Saturday. About an inch of snow is possible in most areas of the metro Saturday, the weather service predicts.
Cold air will again come with Saturday’s snow, the weather service said in its Thursday forecast discussion. Saturday night wind chills could range from -5 to -20 degrees.
While there is not much of a chance for snow on Sunday, bitter-cold temperatures continue, according to the NWS.
There’s another chance for moderate snow accumulation on Monday and Tuesday, weather models show, as the NWS tracks another storm system. Dangerous cold temperatures could return to the metro by the middle of next week, the weather service said.
