Get ready for the possibility of heavy snowfall in Kansas City.

A strong winter storm will push through the region overnight Tuesday, blanketing the area with several inches of powdery snow, according to the National Weather Service. Freezing rain, which could coat some areas in a light glaze of ice, is also possible.

The weather service expanded its winter storm warning to include the entire Kansas City forecast area, saying travel could become difficult.

“The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes,” the weather service said.

The winter storm warning is in effect from midnight Tuesday to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

About a half foot of snow in Kansas City forecast

Here’s a look at the latest forecast:

Skies will be mostly cloudy on Tuesday, keeping temperatures below freezing, well below the 42 degrees typical this time of year in Kansas City.

While there is a slight chance for some snow in the evening, it will spread over the area mainly after midnight, the weather service said.

Kansas City is sitting in an area that favors heavier snow totals. The storm system is also expected to track along Interstate 44, from southwest to northeast Missouri, a track that also favors heavier snowfall, the weather service said.

Between 4 and 8 inches of snow is expected across much of the Kansas City forecast area. In the metro, snow totals will be heavier north of Interstate 70.

“A brief period of freezing rain may affect the extreme southern portion of the forecast area tomorrow morning where light icing and may limit total closer to 4 to 6 inches,” the weather service said.

A few hundredths of an inch of ice is anticipated for areas south of I-70, the weather service said.

The snow is expected to exit the area by late afternoon and evening.

Cold air moves in behind the winter storm

As the winter storm system exits the area, frigid air will move in.

Temperatures will plummet Thursday morning, running between a few degrees below zero to a few degrees above zero.

“Factor in the winds and wind chill values will range from 5 to 15 below zero,” the weather service said.

Daytime temperatures will rebound to the low 20s.

Another cold night is expected, with temperatures falling to the single digits and wind chills below zero.

Friday’s temperatures will rebound to near normal, with highs in the mid-30s to lower 40s.

Another storm sets sights on Kansas City area

Another storm, although weaker than Wednesday’s storm, is expected to push through the area overnight Friday and Saturday.

This will bring another chance for rain and light snow, which is expected to continue through Saturday night.

“Snow totals are expected to be limited at this time as moisture will be limited,” the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 40 degrees on Saturday, dipping to a high of 20 degrees on Sunday. The Presidents Day holiday on Monday is expected to be partly sunny, with temperatures around 31 degrees.
