A blizzard warning is in effect for part of the Kansas City metro area over the next two days as icy conditions are expected to transition into snowfall, the National Weather Service said.

Blowing snow is expected to reduce visibility in parts of northeast Kansas and north central, northwest and west-central Missouri.

The blizzard warning is expected to last from 3 a.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Visibility may drop below a quarter-mile due to falling and blowing snow, the weather service said in its warning.

“Travel should be restricted to emergencies only,” the weather service said in the warning. “If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.”

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the entire metro area until 3 a.m. Monday. Snow and sleet accumulations between 8 and 15 inches are possible, the weather service said. Ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch and wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour are possible.
