Warmer weather is expected in Kansas City on Wednesday, but you better keep that cold winter gear handy.

Temperatures will bounce back to slightly above average, climbing to near 50 degrees by the afternoon, the National Weather Service said. Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures in the mid-40s this time of year in Kansas City.

Some areas south of the U.S. 50 highway on the southern part of the metro could see temperatures climb into the mid-50s.

It will also be breezy, with sustained winds around 10 mph and gusts in the mid- to upper 20s.

But don’t let the warmer weather lull you into a false sense that winter hasn’t arrived.

Strong cold front to plow through Kansas City

“The real push of significantly colder and drier air arrives this evening with a stronger cold front plowing through the area,” the weather service said. “Temperatures quickly drop into the teens and 20s by midnight and by sunrise on Thursday, the area will be 30-35 degrees colder than just 12-15 hours prior.”

The weather service said that the bigger story is that with this shot of cold air, wind chill temperatures will plunge into the single digits in Kansas City. In northern Missouri, wind chill temperatures are expected to fall below zero.

Temperatures will only reach the mid-20s by the afternoon and then tumble into the upper teens overnight.

The cold air mass will slide east, but Friday morning temperatures will remain in the low to mid-teens.

Record-setting warmth this weekend?

Temperatures will begin to warm up on Friday, climbing close to normal. The metro will see temps reach the low 40s.

It will be even warmer on Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures climbing into the middle to upper 50s.

“For Sunday, there is even a 40% to as much as 60% chance parts of eastern Kansas and western Missouri climb into the low 60s,” the weather service said.

The weather service said there is a possibility of increased cloud cover moving into the area with a storm system from the south. This could bring a small chance for rain in the southern part of the Kansas City forecast area.

“If the storm trends further south and east, we could easily see highs of 60+ degrees Sunday afternoon,” the weather service said. “The record for Sunday is 69, set in 1946, and that seems very unlikely at this point.”
