A Jackson County judge has sentenced a 26-year-old man to 15 years in prison in the stabbing of his girlfriend’s two children at their Kansas City home earlier this summer, according to court documents.

Gabriel Martinez pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action in the stabbing of the children, a boy under the age of 5 years old and a girl under the age of 15.

The judge sentenced Martinez to 12 years in prison for each of the assault charges and three years for each of the armed criminal action charges. The judge then ordered the sentences to run both concurrently and consecutive, resulting in a total sentence of 15 years.

The plea came as Martinez was to stand trial this week.

Children stabbed in KC home

According to court documents, police responded to a disturbance at a home in the 3800 block of Indiana Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. on July 9.

A woman told arriving officers that her boyfriend, Martinez, was inside with her children and allegedly threatened to hurt them. She said she had fled from the house after started Martinez threatened her, according to court documents.

While police knocked on the door, the woman received a threatening call from Martinez,” the woman told police.

Officers then heard a child screaming inside. They kicked in the door, and one of the children ran out. Officers then heard the girl scream upstairs.

As police went upstairs, they saw Martinez exit a room with his hands up and took him into custody. They found the girl with a stab wound to the abdomen.

Emergency medical crews took the girl, who was critically injured, and the boy, who had been stabbed in the back and chest, to Children’s Mercy for treatment of their injuries.
