The remaining days leading up to Thanksgiving look pretty good weather-wise for those traveling in the region, although it will be quite chilly, according to the National Weather Service.

The first wave of cold weather has moved into the Kansas City area, sending temperatures plunging into the lower 20s early Tuesday at Kansas City International Airport. Winds between 5 and 10 mph made it feel much colder, with wind chill temperatures dipping to 12 degrees.

Clear skies are expected, allowing temperatures to rebound to around 47 degrees, just a couple of degrees cooler than the average of 49 degrees for this date. Overnight temperatures will fall back into the mid-30s.

On Wednesday, temperatures will be slightly cooler, with temperatures in the mid-40s.

There is a chance for light rain on Wednesday. Some snow may mix with the rain overnight across northern Missouri, but the weather service said no snow accumulation is expected.

Colder weather likely on Thanksgiving

The weather service said a blast of even colder weather is expected to arrive on Thanksgiving and linger through the weekend.

“The main story than for the Thanksgiving holiday will be the cold temperatures,” the weather service said. “Most of the area will struggle to get above the upper 30s during the afternoon hours for the exception of our far southern counties.”

In the metro, daytime temperatures will be around 39 degrees on the holiday and gradually become colder each day before dropping to around freezing on Sunday. Overnight temperatures will be in the teens and 20s.

Post-holiday storm could bring snow

Dry weather is expected on Thursday and Friday. A clipper system passing by the region may bring light snow. The weather service said it is still being determined where and how much snow will fall.

The weather service said central and eastern Missouri have a greater chance for light snow, with a 20% to 40% possibility of more than an inch of snow. The Kansas City area might see a light dusting of snow.

“It is still too early to pinpoint snowfall accumulations on Saturday if we even have the moisture needed to produce precipitation,” the weather service said.
