It’s been 239 days since it’s been this cold in Kansas City. How long will it linger?
It’s been a while since Kansas City has been this cold, and while a weekend warm-up is coming, the metro expects a blast of cold weather to return for Thanksgiving week, according to the National Weather Service.
At 2 a.m. Friday, Kansas City dropped into the 20s for the first time since March 27, the weather service in Kansas City said on its social media accounts, including Facebook.
“That was a streak of 239 days with temperatures above 30 degrees, which was the 8th longest stretch on KC’s 137-year period of record,” the weather service said.
Temperatures fell to 27 degrees shortly before 7 a.m. Friday at Kansas City International Airport. The wind chill was 21 degrees.
Temperatures will warm slightly in the afternoon, topping out in the upper 40s, which is close to Kansas City’s average of 51 degrees for this time of year in Kansas City.
It will be another cold night with temperatures into the upper 20s.
Warmer than usual weather coming this weekend
A warm-up this weekend will take the chill off of Kansas City.
Unusually warm weather will be around 10 degrees above normal, peaking on Sunday, according to the weather service. Daytime temperatures will be in the upper 50s on Saturday and the low to mid-60s on Sunday.
Early morning temperatures will be near freezing on Saturday and the upper 40s on Sunday.
Sunny and dry weather is expected this weekend. The weather service also said no hazardous weather is forecast over the next few days.
What’s the Thanksgiving week forecast?
The brief stretch of warm weather will end as a cold front pushes through the area Sunday night.
The front will bring even colder air throughout the holiday week. The weather service said there is a chance for some very light rain showers Sunday night into Monday.
Temperatures on Monday will be in the mid-40s during the day and falling into the 20s overnight.
There’s “still not a lot of clarity as to how the lead up to and the Thanksgiving holiday will play out,” the weather service said.
Dry and cool weather will persist on Tuesday, with temperatures in the mid-40s during the day and around freezing overnight.
The chance for rain or snow from Wednesday into Thanksgiving is uncertain. The weather service said precipitation chances are looking less likely.
One forecast model suggests that cold air will lag behind the precipitation, resulting in any precipitation falling as rain or a rain and snow mix with little to no snow accumulation, the weather service said.
“Temperatures Wednesday will be in the 40s with highs for Thanksgiving Day on the cool side in the mid-30s to lower 40s,” the weather service said.
