A freeze warning is in effect for the Kansas City area as cooler overnight temperatures start to bring frost in the early morning hours.

Low temperatures Wednesday morning were expected to bottom out in the upper 20s to low 30s, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City. Kansas Citians can expect some frost on their windshields Wednesday due to clear skies and freezing overnight temperatures.

Freeze warnings are issued when surface temperatures are expected to drop below freezing over a large area for an extended period of time, regardless of whether frost develops, according to the NWS.

The freezing conditions are not expected to last long, though, and temperatures are likely to rise above 32 degrees by 9 a.m. across the metro, the weather service said in its forecast discussion Wednesday.

The weather service predicts a sunny Wednesday with a high near 62 degrees. Overnight conditions are expected to remain clear with a low around 42 degrees.

Conditions ripe for fires

Later in the week, conditions could be ripe for fires. The weather service is monitoring the potential for gusty winds amid low humidity Thursday and Friday.

“Unfortunately, this results in two things. The first is that the prospects for rain get further delayed, and two, fire weather concerns elevate,” the NWS said in its Wednesday forecast discussion.

The weather service predicts sunny and clear conditions throughout the rest of the week. Thursday’s high will be around 69 degrees with the possibility of 29 mile per hour wind gusts. The overnight low is expected to be around 48 degrees.

Kansas City’s weekend weather forecast

Friday through Sunday, conditions will remain sunny with a high each day hovering near 73 degrees, the weather service predicts.

Chances of precipitation are delayed until Monday, and even then, the chances of rain remain slim at 50%, the weather service predicts.
