Relief from the heat is on the way, KC. Will it be replaced by storms and downpours?
The Kansas City area will face one final day of hot and humid weather before temperatures begin to cool off, according to the National Weather Service.
Afternoon temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-90s in the metro, with heat index values topping out between 97 and 102 degrees, the weather service said. Kansas City typically sees temperatures in the mid-80s this time of year.
“Shower and thunderstorm chances return tonight (Thursday) through tomorrow (Friday) afternoon as a cold front moves through the region,” the weather service said.
A few strong to marginally severe thunderstorms will be possible. The weather service said gusty winds and heavy downpours will be the storm’s main threats.
The storms are expected to begin moving into the area after 7 p.m. The cold front should make its way through most of the Kansas City forecast area by mid-Friday morning, likely stalling along a line stretching from Butler to Moberly in Missouri.
Cooler weather for Labor Day weekend in KC
The cold front will bring noticeably cooler and more comfortable weather for the weekend, the weather service said.
Temperatures will be around 80 degrees on Friday, 84 degrees on Saturday and 86 degrees on Sunday.
Showers and thunderstorms may form along the stalled cold front Friday afternoon. The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center has included portions of central Missouri within a marginal risk for severe storms.
The weather service said any lingering rain should finally clear out by early Saturday morning.
Another cold front is expected to push through the region on Sunday into Monday, sending a “reinforcing shot of cooler and drier air into the region, with quite pleasant conditions for Monday and Tuesday,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
Kansas City’s temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70s on Labor Day and near 80 degrees on Tuesday.
