Warm, moist air to move into Kansas City setting stage for heavy rainfall
Storms are brewing, and Kansas City will likely see heavy rains from showers and thunderstorms that will return to the area on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
As moist air from the Gulf of Mexico flows into the area, partly sunny skies will gradually become cloudy, according to the weather service. The chance of rain increases as the air becomes more humid. Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 80s.
The stage will be set for the first round of storms by the afternoon. The weather service said that scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over Kansas and move eastward into the Kansas City area by late afternoon into the evening.
Severe weather is not expected, but localized heavy rainfall is possible with the “most robust and persistent activity,” the weather service said. Eastern Kansas and far western Missouri have the best chances for heavy rains.
Showers, thunderstorms continue Friday
The stormy weather is expected to continue into Friday. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible.
Because of relatively weak steering winds, the storms will be slow to move, lingering over the area and leading to the potential for heavy rainfall, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
The weather service will monitor conditions and consider whether a flash flood watch should be issued, particularly in the southern portions of the forecast area.
Rain is expected across the Kansas City area, ranging from half an inch to an inch, although some areas could see as much as two inches.
The weather will be cooler on Friday, with temperatures in the low 70s. Typically, this time of year, Kansas City temperatures are around 80 degrees.
Rain possible this weekend
If a cold front can make it far enough south this weekend, drier and less humid conditions are expected, according to the weather service.
There is a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms on Saturday morning. Skies will become partly sunny, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the low 80s
On Sunday, partly sunny skies are expected, but a chance for showers and thunderstorms move into the area in the afternoon. Temperatures will climb into the mid-80s.
Winds will shift by the end of the weekend, coming out of the south and drawing additional heat and humidity back into the region, the weather service said. Scattered storms will be possible early next week. Temperatures will be in the mid- to upper 80s.
