Rounds of storms expected to roll through Kansas City area; heavy rains possible
Get ready Kansas City: Rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to roll through the area this week beginning with the possibility of rain Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
“Should be dry for most as day breaks across the region, but rain chances will gradually increase from the south-southwest through the day and into the evening,” the weather service said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The greatest likelihood for showers and thunderstorms will be Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, where there is a 70 to 100% chance of thunderstorms.
Widespread rainfall is expected across the region, with most areas seeing between 1 to 2 inches through Thursday evening. Higher amounts of rain could fall in some localized areas. Rainfall could be heavy at times, the weather service said.
In the Kansas City metro area, the chance of rain jumps to 50 to 60% by 9 a.m. Tuesday and increased to 90 to 100% of thunderstorms by 3 p.m., according to the weather service. The chance of thunderstorms continues overnight, but drops to 70 to 80% by midnight and then to 50 to 60% by 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The possibility of thunderstorms falls to 40 to 50% Wednesday afternoon before increasing to 50 to 60% by Wednesday evening.
There is a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms Wednesday evening across far northwestern Missouri and extreme northeastern Kansas City. Hail the size of quarters will be the greatest concern if severe weather develops, the weather service said.
Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to swing through the area Thursday, bringing additional rains.
Conditions through Thursday will be warmer than usual, with highs in the 70s. Typically, temperatures are in the mid-60s this time of year in Kansas City.
The chance for rain and thunderstorms continue Friday and through the weekend.
Looking ahead into next week, colder temperatures area expected drop into the Kansas City area. Freezing overnight temperatures are expected for Halloween through Nov. 3.
