Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Monday morning commute in Kansas City metro

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect Monday morning throughout the Kansas City metro area, with strong winds and hail possible during rush hour, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch was issued around 5 a.m. Monday and will last until noon, impacting parts of Kansas, Missouri and Iowa, including the Kansas City metro area.

Storms are expected to hit the metro area between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Strong winds up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are possible along with moderate to heavy rainfall.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued around 7:30 a.m. that includes Kansas City, Overland Park and Kansas City, Kansas. The warning will last until 8:15 a.m.

Drivers should slow down and turn on their headlights and wipers during heavy rain. Traveling at high speeds during heavy rain, meteorologists warned, can increase chances of hydroplaning.
