Storms threaten to bring hail, 60 mph winds to Kansas City overnight

It could be a bumpy night in Kansas City as strong to severe storms are expected to sweep across the area after dark Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

The main concerns with the storms are strong winds up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. A few brief tornadoes are also possible, the weather service said.

“Make sure you stay updated on the forecast and have multiple ways to receive warnings,” the weather service said on Twitter.

The timing of the severe weather will be between 7 and 11 p.m. for northwestern Missouri. Strong to severe storms are expected to arrive in the Kansas City area between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Before the storms arrive, it will be a warm and windy day in Kansas City. Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-70s and winds gusts of 40 mph are expected in the afternoon.

Showers and storms are expected to continue Wednesday, but no severe weather is expected. Temperatures are expected to be near 60 degrees. A cold front moving through the region on Wednesday, however, is expected to send temperatures tumbling to 45 degrees by 5 p.m.

There’s a chance for rain overnight Wednesday which could transition to a light snow early Thursday north of St. Joseph. Only a dusting of snow is possible and little to now accumulating snow is expected.

Conditions will dry out Thursday, but northwest winds will linger and keep temperatures from climbing above 50 degrees. Normal temperatures for this time of year in Kansas City is around 60 degrees.

Temperatures will return to normal Friday on what is expected to be a mostly sunny day. A chance for rain, however, returns for the start of the weekend.
