Winter storm warning issued for the Kansas City area. How much snow is expected?
In a single word, the National Weather Service in Kansas City on Wednesday summed up on Twitter the forecast for the metro area: “Snow.”
An approaching winter storm is threatening to bring significant accumulating snow Thursday through early Friday to Kansas City and areas north of the metro, according to the weather service.
Between 4 and 7 inches of snow is expected.
Because of the impending storm, the weather service issued a winter storm warning for the Kansas City region that goes into effect at 9 p.m. Wednesday and continues to 6 a.m. Friday.
“Travel could be very difficult,” the weather service warned. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.”
The greatest snowfall totals are expected along and between the U.S. 36 highway corridor near St. Joseph and U.S. 50 highway corridor in the Kansas City area.
Periods of moderate to heavy bands of snowfall are expected, especially Thursday morning, the weather service said.
Timing of the storm
Snow is expected to begin falling across northeast Kansas and far northwest Missouri after sunset Wednesday. Snowfall will spread to the east and southeast overnight through Thursday morning.
For the immediate Kansas City metro, snow is expected to start falling around midnight, the weather service said. Snow is expected to continue falling into Friday.

In addition to the snow, bitter cold conditions are expected to return. Temperatures will be in the mid-20s to mid-30s on Thursday and upper-20s to mid-30s on Friday and Saturday.
Temperatures are expected to fall overnight to the teens by Friday morning and the single digits with wind chills below zero on Saturday.
Conditions will rebound quickly, with temperatures in the 50s expected on Sunday and Monday and in the 60s on Tuesday.
