A looming winter storm that is expected to sweep through the Kansas City area beginning Wednesday night could bring significant accumulating snow to the Kansas City area, according to the National Weather Service.

Although uncertainty remains as to when and where the storm will develop, the greatest snowfall is expected generally along, and north of, the Interstate 70 corridor and into northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri, the weather service said.

Periods of moderate to heavy bands of snowfall are possible with this storm, which likely will stretch from Wednesday night through Friday morning.

“Traveling Thursday? Begin to think of alternatives, you may have to alter your plans,” the weather service said.

In Kansas City, between 3 and 7 inches of snow is possible. Meanwhile, areas north of Kansas City could see as much as 5 to 8 inches of snow. Areas south of the metro area could see between 3 and 6 inches of snow, according to the weather service.

Here’s a look at the latest snowfall probability data, which provides a range of snowfall possibilities, that the weather service has issued for the Kansas City area:

Much of the Kansas City area can expect to see between 3 and 6 inches of snow from a winter storm that will cut through the region, according to data from the National Weather Service in Kansas City. Expected snowfall totals will change as the storm draws nearer.

As for the timing of the storm, snow is expected to start falling around 9 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph and midnight in Kansas City.

Unseasonably cold weather will accompany the winter storm with temperatures rising only to the mid-20s to 30s Thursday through Saturday. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop in the teens on Thursday and the single digits or possibly just below zero Saturday morning.

The cold weather and snow likely will not be around too long as temperatures are expected to rebound into the 50s on Sunday and into the mid-50s and low 60s on Monday.
