Cold temperatures and bitter wind chills are expected to create dangerous conditions across the Kansas City region, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

Wind chills are expected to range between -5 and -15 degrees during the morning on Thursday and Friday.

“This is some of the coldest air of the season so far!” the weather service said on Twitter. “Make sure you dress appropriately before heading out.”

Temperatures across the area had fallen to around 5 degrees across much of the Kansas City area early Thursday. Wind chills made it feel well below zero. The wind chill at Kansas City International Airport was -7 degrees shortly before 7 a.m.

There wasn’t going to be much relief from the bitterly cold conditions as daytime temperatures were expected to reach only into the upper teens on Thursday before falling back into the single digits overnight, according to the weather service.

Conditions on Friday will be warmer, with temperatures climbing into the 20s. The warm up will continue into the weekend, with temperatures climbing above freezing and into the 40s on Saturday and to near 50 degrees on Sunday and Monday, according to the weather services forecast discussion.

Another blast of cold air is expected next week, sending temperatures tumbling on Tuesday.
